This October, Floor Coverings International – Columbia West is getting in the Halloween spirit by sharing our flooring nightmares. Many of our customers come to us simply for a home renovation project to make their home look and feel nicer. Some of our customers come to us because they need rescuing from a flooring nightmare. Here are some of the most common flooring disasters and how to fix them.

Water-damaged hardwood floors

Water-damaged hardwood floors – what a nightmare! Hardwood floors exposed to too much moisture like a flood, large spill, or being in a room with a high moisture content (like a bathroom, basement, kitchen or laundry room) can buckle, stain, and mold. It’s the result of an unfortunate situation, or hardwoods shouldn’t have been used there in the first place. Some older homes have hardwood installed throughout the house without thought put into the effects of moisture. Many times, the floors are so damaged that they’re beyond repair and have to be replaced.

The Fix – Luxury Vinyl Plank

Consider Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)  – an affordable waterproof flooring option, made specifically to give the look and feel of hardwood. It is created in planks, as opposed to typical vinyl sheets, for the traditional wood look. LVP works great in high traffic areas and is also waterproof, making it ideal for kitchens and bathrooms. If you’re not into the hardwood look anymore, other waterproof flooring options include tile, stone, rubber, bamboo, cork. See our write up about waterproof flooring for more options.

Stained carpets

Carpet stains are the worst, and they always seem to happen on light colored carpet, am I right? Wine, lipstick, pet stains, and coffee seem impossible to remove, especially if they’ve settled into the carpet. There comes a point where the carpet is just done and it’s time to replace it.

The Fix – Stainmaster Carpets

The good news is that carpets have come a long way in the last decade or so. New technology has allowed the industry to create carpets that are hypoallergenic, stain resistant, waterproof, pet AND kid friendly. Check out our write up about advances in carpet technology for a full rundown.

If you don’t want to worry about staining at all, there are low maintenance flooring options out there. Vinyl, tile, laminate, and linoleum require a simple swipe of a cloth to clean up any spill or mishap.

Ugly Linoleum Floors

Linoleum floors can be ugly because tastes have changed in the past 50 years, or they could be damaged and unsightly. Either way, homeowners usually want to get rid of their old linoleum floors. Kitchens and bathrooms are popular rooms for linoleum, and Floor Coverings International has the flooring options to make these rooms a dream instead of a nightmare.

The Fix – Best Floors for Kitchens and Bathrooms

For bathrooms, waterproof flooring is a must. We suggest tiles in porcelain, ceramic or stone, or vinyl and rubber flooring. Each has its pros and cons, and corresponding price tags. Take a look at our full write up on the best flooring for bathrooms for full details.

Kitchens need to have floors with some water resistance. Tile, stone, vinyl, and rubber work are great choices for kitchens and bathrooms. Bamboo and cork work well in kitchens, too. Our blog Kitchen Floors that Inspire – the Best Flooring for Kitchens will give you inspiration for the most popular room in the house.
